Best Pokémon Sets to Open: Which Packs Suit Your Goal

October 31, 2026 · 3 min read

On this page

For the best chance at one specific chase card, open a smaller recent set such as Chaos Rising or Pitch Black. For big hits and variety, try Ascended Heroes. For a one-off anniversary pack, try 30th Celebration. Open packs for fun, though: most are worth less on average than they cost.

Our picks by goal

Your goal Good choice Why
Hit one specific chase card Pitch Black or Chaos Rising About 1 in 480 to 1 in 496 for one specific Special Illustration Rare
Pull a big hit of any kind 30th Celebration Special Illustration Rares at about 1 in 21, in smaller 6-card packs
See a big variety of cards Ascended Heroes 295 cards, and Mega Attack Rares as an extra tier
Chase a famous card Prismatic Evolutions Includes the Umbreon ex Special Illustration Rare, at about 1 in 1,440 for one specific card

The odds come from our pull rates guide. We don't rank one set as the best overall, because prices move constantly and the right answer depends on what you want.

Prismatic Evolutions Jan 2025 180 1 in 45

30th Celebration has a different 6-card, all-foil pack structure, so its odds aren't directly comparable.

Are Pokémon packs worth opening for value?

Usually not, if profit is the goal. PackVerdict's April 2026 analysis estimated each pack's average card value at below its cheapest pack price in every set it featured:

Set Estimated card value per pack Cheapest single pack
Prismatic Evolutions €2.33 €9.60
Ascended Heroes €3.48 €13.11
Perfect Order €0.92 €2.95
Evolving Skies €4.47 €33.05
151 €6.14 €19.95

These are low estimates from Cardmarket data, as the analysis noted it was missing Illustration Rare data for Scarlet & Violet sets. They're also about six months old as of this writing. Treat them as a sign of the overall pattern, not current prices.

If you want one particular card, buying it individually is nearly always cheaper and more certain than chasing it through packs.

How to get better value when you do open

  • Compare price per pack. Boxes can work out cheaper than loose packs, but not always. Perfect Order boxes were reported at about €4.72 per pack in April, more than its cheapest single pack.
  • Avoid hype pricing right at release. Prices can move a lot in a set's first weeks, in either direction.
  • Buy from reputable stores. Packs sold by individuals may have been resealed. See how to spot fakes.
  • Set a budget first. Decide what you're willing to spend on the fun of opening, then stop there.

Try before you buy

Our Pokémon pack opening simulator lets you open packs from 42 sets for free. It's a good way to see which set you enjoy, and how rarely the big hits really come up. The results are simulated and the packs are simplified.

FAQ

What is the most valuable recent Pokémon set? It depends on the measure. Sealed prices are led by older sets. CBR reported in April 2026 that an Evolving Skies booster box cost more than $2,500, and that 151 bundles were around $188 for six packs.

Is it better to buy a booster box or single packs? Boxes often cost less per pack, but compare current prices, since exceptions exist.

Should I keep packs sealed as an investment? Some older sealed products have risen a lot, but past gains don't guarantee future ones. Only put in money you can afford to lose.

Which Pokémon set is best for beginners? For collecting, pick a set whose art and Pokémon you like. To play, start with a ready-made deck using our Pokémon TCG beginner's guide.
