Pokémon Type Chart: Strengths and Weaknesses of All 18 Types

October 31, 2026 · 5 min read

On this page

A Pokémon move does double damage to types it's strong against, half damage to types that resist it and no damage to types that are immune. There are 18 types, and this chart has been in place since Fairy arrived in Generation 6. The tables below come from PokéAPI's type data.

Read across from the attacking type, then find the defending type at the top. 2 means double damage, ½ means half, 0 means none and · means normal damage. On a phone, swipe the table sideways.

How dual-type damage works

When a Pokémon has two types, multiply the effect of each type together:

  • 4x damage: both types are weak to the move. Ice hits Dragon/Flying for 4x, because both Dragon and Flying are weak to Ice.
  • 1x damage: one type is weak and the other resists, so they cancel out. Fire against Water/Grass is 1x.
  • 0.25x damage: both types resist the move.
  • 0x damage: one type is immune, and that overrides everything else. Electric does nothing to a Water/Ground Pokémon, even though Water is weak to Electric.

Which types are best?

No type is best in every game, but the chart shows some clear patterns:

  • Best attacking coverage: Fighting and Ground are each super effective against five types.
  • Best defensive type: Steel resists ten types and is immune to Poison.
  • Most weaknesses: Grass and Rock each have five.
  • Fewest resistances: Ice resists only itself.
  • Least offensive coverage: Normal isn't super effective against anything.

For a team, aim for moves that cover many types instead of relying on one strong type. Also avoid stacking the same weakness. Three Pokémon that are all weak to Ground can lose quickly to one Ground-type attacker.

Easy ways to remember the matchups

Many matchups follow real-world logic: Water puts out Fire, Fire burns Grass and Grass drinks up Water. Others take practice:

  • Ghost and Normal don't affect each other at all.
  • Dragon moves can't hurt Fairy at all, but Fairy moves are super effective against Dragon.
  • Dark is immune to Psychic, and Psychic is strong against Fighting and Poison.
  • Ground is immune to Electric but can't hit Flying.

Does the type chart apply to Pokémon cards?

Not directly. The Pokémon Trading Card Game has its own, smaller set of types, and each card prints its own weakness and resistance. See our Pokémon TCG beginner's guide for how that works.

FAQ

How many Pokémon types are there? There are 18: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel and Fairy.

What is Fairy weak to? Poison and Steel. Fairy is also immune to Dragon.

What is Dragon weak to? Ice, Dragon and Fairy.

What is Ghost weak to? Ghost and Dark. Ghost is immune to Normal and Fighting.

Can a Pokémon be immune to two types? Yes. Ghost is immune to both Normal and Fighting, and a dual-type Pokémon can pick up an immunity from each of its types.
