On this page
There are 1,025 Pokémon species across nine generations, as of October 2026. Three more, the starters from Pokémon Winds and Waves, have been officially revealed, which is why some sites say 1,028. The tenth generation isn't out until 2027.
Number of Pokémon by generation
The counts come from PokéAPI's species data.
| Generation | Pokédex numbers | New Pokémon | Running total | Main region |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1–151 | 151 | 151 | Kanto |
| 2 | 152–251 | 100 | 251 | Johto |
| 3 | 252–386 | 135 | 386 | Hoenn |
| 4 | 387–493 | 107 | 493 | Sinnoh |
| 5 | 494–649 | 156 | 649 | Unova |
| 6 | 650–721 | 72 | 721 | Kalos |
| 7 | 722–809 | 88 | 809 | Alola |
| 8 | 810–905 | 96 | 905 | Galar and Hisui |
| 9 | 906–1025 | 120 | 1,025 | Paldea |
Generation 5 added the most new species, while Generation 6 added the fewest. For the games behind each generation, see our Pokémon games in order list.

Why do sites give different totals?
It usually depends on what gets counted:
- 1,025 counts released species in the National Pokédex.
- 1,028 adds the three announced Generation 10 starters: Browt, Pombon and Gecqua.
- Higher totals count forms too, such as Mega Evolutions and regional variants. Those aren't separate species, so the total depends on which forms a site includes.
For most purposes, 1,025 is the number to use until Generation 10 launches.

How many new Pokémon will Generation 10 add?
Nobody outside the developers can say yet. Winds and Waves are set for 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, and only the three starters had been officially confirmed in the sources we checked. A leak reported in July 2026 claimed over 300 new Pokémon including regional forms, but this hasn't been confirmed. Treat it as a rumor until The Pokémon Company says otherwise.
Can you catch every Pokémon in one game?
Usually not. Recent games have a limited regional Pokédex, so a full collection generally means transferring Pokémon from other games and trading with other players. Check the Pokédex for the game you're playing before you start a completion run.
