Pokémon Type Matchup Calculator

Pokémon type calculator: pick a Pokémon or up to two types to see every weakness, resistance and immunity, plus attack and team coverage.

How to use the type calculator

The calculator has three modes, one per tab:

  • Defense shows how every attacking type hits one Pokémon. Search for a Pokémon by name, or tap one or two types. You get its 4× and 2× weaknesses, its resistances, its immunities and the types that do normal damage.
  • Attack shows what a move type is strong and weak against, and which dual types take 4× from it. Pick a second type to see which type combinations resist both moves.
  • Team checks up to six Pokémon at once. The table shows how each attacking type hits each team member, how many of them are weak to it and how many resist it.

The search covers every species, plus regional forms, Mega Evolutions and other forms whose types differ from the original. Try "Rotom Wash" or "Alolan Ninetales". Use the Type chart menu to switch to the Gen 2 to 5 or Gen 1 rules.

How the multipliers work

Each attacking type does one of four things to a defending type: double damage (2×), normal damage (1×), half damage (½×) or no damage (0×). For a Pokémon with two types, the game multiplies the two results together, which gives six possible outcomes: 4×, 2×, 1×, ½×, ¼× and 0×.

Attack Defender Calculation Result
Ice Garchomp (Dragon/Ground) 2 × 2 4×
Electric Gyarados (Water/Flying) 2 × 2 4×
Grass Gyarados (Water/Flying) 2 × ½ 1×
Fire Kingdra (Water/Dragon) ½ × ½ ¼×
Ground Charizard (Fire/Flying) 2 × 0 0×

A weakness and a resistance cancel out, and an immunity wipes out the other type's multiplier. Of the 324 type pairings in the current chart, 51 are super effective, 61 are not very effective, 8 have no effect and the other 204 do normal damage.

Abilities that change matchups

Some abilities override the chart. Choose one in Defense or Team mode to apply it. If you search for a Pokémon that always has one of these abilities, such as Rotom or Shedinja, it's applied for you.

Ability Effect in the calculator
Levitate, Earth Eater Immune to Ground
Flash Fire, Well-Baked Body Immune to Fire
Water Absorb, Storm Drain Immune to Water
Dry Skin Immune to Water, takes 1.25× from Fire
Volt Absorb, Lightning Rod, Motor Drive Immune to Electric
Sap Sipper Immune to Grass
Thick Fat Fire and Ice damage halved
Heatproof, Water Bubble Fire damage halved
Purifying Salt Ghost damage halved
Wonder Guard Only super effective moves hit

Thick Fat, Heatproof, Water Bubble and Purifying Salt halve the attacker's stat or the move's power rather than the damage itself, so real damage lands close to half.

Older generations

The type chart has changed twice. Pick the matching chart in the menu when you play an older game:

Games Differences from today's chart
Gen 2 to 5 No Fairy type. Steel also resisted Ghost and Dark.
Gen 1 No Dark, Steel or Fairy types. Bug and Poison were super effective against each other, Ghost had no effect on Psychic, and Ice did normal damage to Fire.

The Pokémon search and abilities are switched off for the older charts, because some Pokémon had different types back then. Today's Fairy types, for example, had other types before Gen 6.

Tips for using the results

  • Check 4× weaknesses first. One super effective hit on a 4× weakness often decides a battle.
  • Fix shared weaknesses. In Team mode, a row where several members are weak and none resist is a gap. The calculator lists these under Shared weaknesses.
  • Pair move types that cover each other. In Attack mode, pick two types. The shorter the list of combinations that resist both, the better the coverage.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a Pokémon's weaknesses?

Type its name into the search box in Defense mode, or tap its one or two types. The calculator lists every type that hits it for 4× or 2× damage, along with its resistances and immunities.

Why do some Pokémon have 4× weaknesses?

A 4× weakness happens when both of a Pokémon's types are weak to the same attacking type, because the two 2× multipliers are multiplied. Garchomp is Dragon and Ground, and both types are weak to Ice, so Ice moves do 4× damage to it.

Do abilities like Levitate change weaknesses?

Yes. Levitate makes a Pokémon immune to Ground moves, which removes a Ground weakness entirely, and abilities like Flash Fire and Volt Absorb do the same for Fire and Electric. Choose the ability in the calculator to see the adjusted results.

What changed in the type chart in Gen 6?

Generation 6 added the Fairy type and removed Steel's resistance to Ghost and Dark. The chart has stayed the same in the main-series games since then.

Does the calculator count STAB or other damage bonuses?

No. It shows type effectiveness only. Same-type attack bonus, critical hits, weather and items change the final damage, but they don't change which types are weak or resistant.

Does this type chart work for Pokémon cards?

No. The Pokémon TCG has its own smaller set of types, and each card prints its own Weakness and Resistance, as our guide on how to play the Pokémon TCG explains.
